  • Q

What is the 5110D Smart Leak Finder?

  • A

The 5110D is an acoustic emission or ultrasonic device that integrates all of its electronics – including amplification, conditioning, filtering, digitizing, CPU, memory buffer, and communication interface – into a sensor cavity. It is primarily used for leak detection, and it interfaces with smart phones and tablets through a USB connection.

  • Q

    What can the 5110D do?

  • A

The 5110D can be used for gas and liquid leak detection of tubes, pipelines, valves, heat exchangers, air conditioners, and other pressurized facilities in residential homes, commercial buildings, power plants, refineries, pharmaceutical plants, chemical plants, and many other areas. It can also be used for bearing fault monitoring, termite monitoring, and partial discharge detection.

  • Q

What kind smart phone or tablet can be used with this product?

  • A

Android smart phones or tablets can be used as a controller or screen display for the 5110D.

  • Q

Can the 5110D be used with Apple or Windows phones?

  • A

There is no app software currently developed to support Apple and Windows phones.

  • Q

Does the 5110D have audio capabilities?

  • A

Yes, the device converts ultrasonic signals to audio signals that can be played through a smart phone or tablet.

  • Q

What kind of headphones can be used for audio?

  • A

Any kind of wired or Bluetooth wireless headphones can be used.

  • Q

How do I get the 5110D app software?

  • A

The carrying case has a QR code and a website on the inside. You can just scan the code with your smart phone or tablet or go straight to the website where you can download the software.

  • Q

How does the 5110D connect to a mobile device?

  • A

The 5110D connects through a USB cable, which is provided along with your 5110D.

  • Q

    How is the 5110D powered?

  • A

The 5110D is powered by the mobile device connected to it.

  • Q

How long can the device battery last?

  • A

It depends on the mobile device’s battery capability. A new, fully-charged smart phone could easily provide over 8 hours of routine leak detection.

  • Q

What components are included in the 5110D package?

  • A

The 5110D comes equipped with a complete leak detection package, with the exception of a smart phone or tablet. It includes: • 5110D smart sensor • app software (downloaded through QR code) • coiled cable • waveguide • manual (downloaded through QR code) • carrying case.

  • Q

How does the waveguide connect to the 5110D sensor?

  • A

There are threads in the waveguide head and 5110D surface. A thread stud is provided so that they can be assembled together.

  • Q

Does this product require couplant for leak detection?

  • A

A couplant should be used when connecting the 5110D to the waveguide; a droplet of oil or grease in between the sensor surface and waveguide head surface is sufficient. No couplant is needed when the waveguide is in contact with an object for leak detection.

  • Q

How long should it take for leak detection?

  • A

It depends. If you just want to know if a leak exists or how severe it is, it takes only a couple of seconds to determine the average signal. However, taking measurements for a longer time will show you how the signal develops and display trending graphs in real time.

  • Q

How do I determine if there is a leak?

  • A

You first need to establish a baseline signal with no leak. You can do this by testing a reference spot close to the suspected leak. You then test the area with the suspected leak, and compare the average signal level to the baseline. If the second measurement is higher than the baseline, a leak exists. For upstream and downstream valve leak detection, we recommend that you test an area about 500 mm (about 18 inches) away from the valve body to establish the baseline, and then place the wave-guide on the valve body.

  • Q

What’s the sensor frequency of the 5110D?

  • A

    30 KHz resonant sensor.

  • Q

Can I purchase the 5110D sensor with other frequencies other than 30 KHz?

  • A

Please contact MISTRAS using the form on this page.

  • Q

    What’s the warranty policy?

  • A

MISTRAS Group, Inc. warrants the sensor/transducer products of its manufacture to be free from defects in design, workmanship, and material under normal use and service for a period of 90 days after the date of shipment.
